Kaily and Peter's summer wedding at Franciscan Gardens combined two of San Juan Capistrano's best photography locations in one day. They photographed portraits at Mission San Juan Capistrano's historic architecture, then returned to Franciscan Gardens for their garden ceremony and reception.
This approach gave them a wedding gallery with real variety—Spanish colonial grandeur at the Mission and intimate garden settings at Franciscan Gardens—without the complexity of distant venue coordination.
Wedding Day Timeline
The morning started separately. Kaily got ready at a Mission Viejo VRBO with her bridesmaids while Peter prepared at Franciscan Gardens with his groomsmen. They planned a first look before the ceremony to allow time for portraits at both locations without feeling rushed.
This timeline decision proved smart. Instead of squeezing all portraits into the 30 minutes between ceremony and reception, they had relaxed time at both the Mission and the Gardens while their guests enjoyed cocktail hour.
First Look at Franciscan Gardens
Kaily and Peter saw each other for the first time in one of Franciscan Gardens' garden areas. The afternoon light through the trees created soft conditions, and their reactions were genuine—tears, laughter, and the kind of unguarded emotion that makes first look photos so valuable.

We returned to Franciscan Gardens for their 4:00 PM ceremony. The timing worked well for light—late enough to avoid harsh midday sun but early enough to preserve golden hour for post-ceremony portraits.
The ceremony included a sand ceremony where both families participated, which added personal meaning beyond the traditional vows. With extended family from both sides attending—grandparents, siblings, cousins across multiple generations—the family groupings after the ceremony were important to Kaily and Peter.

Reception
The reception started at 5:30 PM with toasts from the matrons of honor, best man, and father of the bride. The father-daughter and mother-son dances followed before the dance floor opened up for the rest of the evening.
Garden receptions at Franciscan Gardens have a different feel than ballroom celebrations—more intimate, easier for guests to move between spaces, and the outdoor setting keeps the atmosphere relaxed even during formal moments like toasts and dances.
